“You’re a leader. I see it and so does everyone else. It’s time for you to see it.”
This statement changed my life.
Hearing this at 21 years old, it was terrifying. Thinking back on it a week later at age 22, I went and gave the man who said this to me a big hug.
It turns out he was right. I had much more in me than I was aware of, and the tough assignment he gave me made me realize it. When it was over, I really believed it, and my life hasn’t been the same.
How different would the world be if we challenged each other like this? Too often we try to sell people something or tell them what they want, when we should instead be telling people who they are.
Good leaders and friends tell people what they’re capable of. Even better ones challenge people to show it.

Psychologist Viktor Frankl said that we should not be afraid of challenging others. One of the best ways to spur growth emotionally and spiritually is for them to rise above a difficult task. We grow from challenge, not passivity.
I can tell you from experience, the moment you realize what you are really capable of is a life changing one. It’s even better when you see someone else realize it.
Find ways to tell the people in your life what you see in them, then find ways for them to show it. It may change their life.
